Kalaheo Steak House

For more than five years, the Kalaheo Steak House has been serving some of the best, most reasonably-priced steaks on Kauai. The cozy, knotty-pine interior is both pleasant and informal, with comfortable booths along the wall and roomy tables set with fresh flowers and candles.

The restaurant prides itself on the finest of ingredients. Steaks are top-grade Midwestern beef. Bread is baked each day at the bakery across the street. Even the dinner salad is exceptionally attractive, served on a lovely glass plate with ripe tomatoes, white beans and red onions.

Choose between a delicious papaya seed dressing, or as a special treat for cheese lovers, a blue cheese dressing made with the genuine article crumbled in a delicious vinaigrette and topped with fresh ground pepper.

The menu offers steaks, seafood, and poultry dinners which include rice or baked potato as well as salad. Our waitress recommended the New York steak ($18.95) and the fresh island opah (10 oz. for $19.95), and we were pleased with both. The generous portion of opah was flaky and tender, though you might have the butter sauce served on the side, unless you love garlic.

When the steak arrived too well done to be ‘medium rare,’ the replacement was even larger, perfectly cooked, and accompanied by a second baked potatowell worth the wait! Prime rib ($18/12 oz. or $24/24 oz.), was both tender and tasty.

Entrees are cooked with little salt, a nice feature. Service is friendly and efficient, and prices are extremely reasonable, with teriyaki chicken ($13.95) at the low end of the entrees. You can also choose a ‘refillable salad plate’ ($6.95).

Kalaheo Steak House offers one of the best values on Kauai, as two can dine in style for less than $50, including one of the 14 nicely selected wines on the almost unbelievably reasonable wine list. An excellent alternative to higher-priced Poipu restaurants, it’s well worth the drive!
